Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper has spent the last week on vacation, and it sounds like he’s returning with a decision on a potential run for governor. A decision is expected to be announced sometime next week.

If he does plan on running he better get his name out to places besides the Oz known as Denver. I still can’t find two people in El Paso County that know who he is.
What about Hefley’s decision? You guys have any more (conflicting) inside information?
My money is on Hickenlooper to run – and win.
Go Hick!!!!!
Gecko, give it a rest. Numerous polls show Hickenlooper with great name ID and popularity. We understand that neither of your friends in El Paso have heard of him. That’s great, but give it a rest already.
Gecko, Look into my eyes. Relax. Continue to belive what you write about Hickenlooper. Relax. Continue to belive no one in El Paso knows who he is. That’s it continue to belive that. Wake up in November ’06. Ooops, Hick’s Governor. Oh well, at least you belived it. LOL.
Who will run for Mayor then?
Gecko, you and your friends need to maybe turn the TV off and pick up a newspaper every once in a while.
If Hickenlooper announces he is running will he announce his resignation at the same time, or hold a subsequent news conference on his resignation to maximize coverage?
Future Candidates for Mayor:
Diana DeGette
Terrence Carroll
Don Mares
Michael Bennett (sp?)
The Founder of Chipotle
Market 41’s Owner
James Dobson
Huey Lewis (and the News)
Marky Mark (and the Funky Bunch)
We need another liberal business person as mayor. Not a career politician (ie Diana DeGette, Terrence Carroll, Don Mares).
I actually hop the the Mayor holds off on resigning until early July. Here’s why:
When he leaves office a special election must be held within 30 days to replace him. If he waits until the 2nd week of July to resign, then the special election can be held on the same day as the August primary and save Denver taxpayers the cost of an extra city-wide election.
Furthermore, Denver will be using the primary as their first election with polling centers (like they are now doing in Larimer county). A mayor’s race will help increase the number of people who will vote in that election and help increase the public’s experience with polling centers.
So if anyone from Hick;’s staff is reading this, please take note of the practicalities I have mentioned.
Hick wouldn’t need to resign. He could stay as Mayor just as Salazar stayed on as Attorney General. If he won, he would take office in January 2007 and would resign then, with the regular election scheduled for that spring anyway.
And Marky Mark is not a liberal business man?
No Need:
I’m not sure that running the City and County of Denver or running for governor are a part-time jobs.
Henry – kind of like running for Governor and being a Congressman? or running for President and being a Senator?
George Bush has turned running the wealthiest country in the world a part time job, so mayor of Denver should be much easier then that.
John Hickenlooper is not running for Governor.
It is about time that Democrats who care about issues such as a woman’s right to choose ended their fanciful day dreaming and found a real candidate.
Speaker Romanoff would make an excellent Governor and he could win the primary.
David Skaggs could win. Even Ed Perlmutter could abandon the blood bath against Peggy Lamm and be elected Governor.
Lulu, yeah I hope Denver does get a liberal Mayor. Keep them up north, as close to Boulder as possible.
And me and my friends don’t watch much tv as your snide remarks say. But if you ever read the Gazette you would realize that not too many people down here gives a rat’s ass about the mayor of Denver. Nothing much in this paper about it.
Tell you what, we’ll start paying more attention to who is running your city if you let us send Focus on the Family and Compassion Intl. to your town. Trade off?
? 2.1.4 Vacancy election.
(A) When the Office of Mayor is vacated, the Council shall declare by resolution that a vacancy exists. Such vacancy shall be filled by a special election, except as otherwise provided herein, which shall be called by the Council to be held not less than one hundred twenty (120) days nor more than one hundred thirty (130) days after the Council declares that such vacancy exists, unless another City-wide election has been scheduled to be held within one hundred sixty (160) days after such vacancy is declared; an d the candidate receiving the greatest number of votes at said election shall qualify and take such office immediately, and shall hold such office for the unexpired portion of the term in which the vacancy occurs.
Dan, that’s from the City Charter.
